Synergistic stabilization of metastable Fe23B6 and γ-Fe in undercooled Fe83B17

Title: Synergistic stabilization of metastable Fe ₂₃B ₆ and γ-Fe in undercooled Fe ₈₃B ₁₇

Abstract

Previous investigations of undercooled liquid Fe ₈₃B ₁₇ near the eutectic composition have found that metastable crystalline phases, such as Fe ₂₃B ₆, can be formed and persist down to ambient temperature even for rather modest cooling rates. Using time-resolved high-energy x-ray diffraction on electrostatically levitated samples of Fe ₈₃B ₁₇, we demonstrate that the Fe ₂₃B ₆ metastable phase and fcc γ-Fe grow coherently from the undercooled Fe ₈₃B ₁₇ liquid and effectively suppress the formation of the equilibrium Fe ₂B + bcc α-Fe phases. Here, the stabilization of γ-Fe offers another opportunity for experimental investigations of magnetism in metastable fcc iron.

In situ Investigation of Magnetism in Metastable Phases of Levitated ${Fe}_{83} B_{17}$ During Solidification

In situ measurements of structure, density, and magnetization on samples of Fe 83 B 17 using an electrostatic levitation furnace allow us to identify and correlate the magnetic and structural transitions in this system during its complex solidification process. In particular, we identify magnetic ordering in the metastable Fe 23 B 6 / fcc Fe coherently grown structures and primitive tetragonal Fe 3 B metastable phase in addition to characterizing the equilibrium Fe 2 B phase. Solidification of undercooled Fe-Cr-Ni alloys was studied by high-speed pyrometry during and after recalescence of levitated, gas-cooled droplets. Alloys were of 70 wt pct Fe, with cr varying from 15 to 19.7 wt pct, balance was Ni. Undercoolings were up to about 300 K. Alloys of Cr content less than that of the eutectic (18.1 wt pct) have face-centered cubic (fcc) (austenite) as their equilibrium primary phase, and alloys of higher Cr content have body-centered cubic (bcc) (ferrite) as their equilibrium primary phase. The solidification behavior of undercooled Fe-Cr-Ni melts of different compositions is investigated with respect to the competitive formation of {delta}-bcc (ferrite) and {gamma}-fcc phase (austenite). Containerless solidification experiments, electromagnetic levitation melting and drop tube experiments of atomized particles, show that {delta} (bcc) solidification is preferred in the highly undercooled melt even at compositions where {delta} is metastable. The solidification products of levitated Fe83B17 studied by high-energy x-ray diffraction

Detailed high-energy x-ray diffraction studies were performed to gain insight into the evolution of phase formation in undercooled Fe ₈₃B ₁₇ and the mechanism for the stabilization of face-centered cubic (fcc) Fe in the presence of Fe ₂₃B ₆. Fe ₈₃B ₁₇ solidifies directly into either the equilibrium Fe ₂B + Fe phases or the metastable Fe ₂₃B ₆ + Fe phases.
