Nucleon spin polarizability at order O(p{sup 4}) in chiral perturbation theory
We calculate the forward spindependent photonnucleon Compton amplitude as a function of photon energy at nexttoleading (O(p{sup 4})) order in chiral perturbation theory, from which we extract the contribution to the nucleon spin polarizability. The result shows a large correction to the leading order contribution. (c) 2000 The American Physical Society.
Virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon in chiral perturbation theory
We investigate the spinindependent part of the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) amplitude off the nucleon within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. We perform a consistent calculation to third order in external momenta according to Weinberg`s power counting. With this calculation we can determine the second and fourthorder structuredependent coefficients of the general lowenergy expansion of the spinaveraged VCS amplitude based on gauge invariance, crossing symmetry, and the discrete symmetries. We discuss the kinematical regime to which our calculation can be applied and compare our expansion with the multipole expansion by Guichon, Liu, and Thomas. We establish the connection ofmore »
Density resummation of perturbation series in a pion gas to leading order in chiral perturbation theory
The mean field (MF) approximation for the pion matter, being equivalent to the leading order chiral perturbation theory, involves no dynamical loops and, if selfconsistent, produces finite renormalizations only. The weight factor of the Haar measure of the pion fields, entering the path integral, generates an effective Lagrangian {delta}L{sub H} which is generally singular in the continuum limit. There exists only one parametrization of the pion fields, for which the weight factor is equal to unity and {delta}L{sub H}=0, respectively. This unique parametrization ensures selfconsistency of the MF approximation. We use it to calculate thermal Green functions of the pionmore »
