Title: Self-seeded single-frequency solid-state ring laser and system using same

Abstract

A method of operating a laser to obtain an output pulse having a single wavelength, comprises inducing an intracavity loss into a laser resonator having an amount that prevents oscillation during a time that energy from the pump source is being stored in the gain medium. Gain is built up in the gain medium with energy from the pump source until formation of a single-frequency relaxation oscillation pulse in the resonator. Upon detection of the onset of the relaxation oscillation pulse, the intracavity loss is reduced, such as by Q-switching, so that the built-up gain stored in the gain medium is output from the resonator in the form of an output pulse at a single frequency. An electronically controllable output coupler is controlled to affect output pulse characteristics. The laser acts a master oscillator in a master oscillator power amplifier configuration. The laser is used for laser peening.

  • This patent describes a monolithic nonplanar ring laser resonator constructed from a single piece of optically isotropic solid state laser material characterized by a non-zero Verdet constant and several facets which determine a closed internal nonplanar optical path including six points of reflection for propagating light around the internal nonplanar optical path. The optical path being symmetrical about a plane which passes between the two most widely separated points of reflection.
  • This patent describes a solid state laser having a single longitudinal mode output at a selected laser output wavelength. It comprises: a block of solid state laser material having a cavity-forming mirror coating on one of two opposing faces, a pumping source for providing pump radiation at a wavelength such that its absorption depth in the block of solid state laser material is less than the dephasing; distance in the block of solid state laser material at the selected laser output wavelength divided by 2{pi}. The cavity-forming mirror having a high reflectivity at the selected laser output wavelength and amore » high transmissiveness at the wavelength of the pump radiation, means for collecting the pump radiation emitted from the pump source and for directing it into the one of the opposed ends of the block of solid state laser material having the cavity-forming mirror coating, and an output coupler optically aligned with the block of solid state laser material.« less
  • A laser device is described comprising: a hollow cylindrical solid state laser medium; pumping means for exciting the laser medium; and an optical resonator that is arranged on both ends in the axial direction of the laser medium, for causing the light emitted into the laser medium to travel back and forth along the axial direction of the laser medium.
