Title: Variable compression ratio device for internal combustion engine

Abstract

An internal combustion engine, particularly suitable for use in a work machine, is provided with a combustion cylinder, a cylinder head at an end of the combustion cylinder and a primary piston reciprocally disposed within the combustion cylinder. The cylinder head includes a secondary cylinder and a secondary piston reciprocally disposed within the secondary cylinder. An actuator is coupled with the secondary piston for controlling the position of the secondary piston dependent upon the position of the primary piston. A communication port establishes fluid flow communication between the combustion cylinder and the secondary cylinder.

  • This patent describes a variable compression ratio control device for an internal combustion engine having a mechanism for varying a compression ratio of the engine in response to engine driving conditions, at least between a first higher stage and a second lower stage, and detecting a current compression ratio; the device comprising: sensor fault detecting means for detecting a malfunction of the compression ratio detecting means, and fail-safe means for varying and fixing a compression ratio to the second lower stage when the sensor fault detecting means detects a malfunction of the compression ratio detecting means.
  • This patent describes a variable compression ratio internal combustion engine having at least one cylinder, a piston disposed in the cylinder and a cylinder head disposed at one end of the cylinder. The cylinder head has a combustion chamber and a piston chamber contiguous with the top of the cylinder. A movable piston disposed in the piston chamber to change the effective volume of the combustion chamber. A closed end of the piston chamber is connected to one of the engine's source of pressurized fluid. A solenoid valve is disposed between the source of pressurized fluid and the piston chamber.more » Energization of the solenoid valve is controlled by a controller to open the solenoid valve when the combustion chamber has a low pressure to displace the movable piston to increase the compression ratio of the engine and to open the solenoid valve when the combustion chamber has a high or peak pressure to displace the movable piston to decrease the compression ratio.« less
  • A compression ratio changing device for an internal combustion engine is described comprising: a connecting rod defining a lock-pin hole therein, the lock-pin hole opening at a small end hole of the connecting rod and extending along an extension of a radius of the small end hole; a piston-pin extending through the small end hole; an eccentric bearing rotatably interposed between the connecting rod and the piston-pin, a lock-pin slidably inserted in the lock-pin hole; and means for driving the lock-pin, the means being fluidly connected to the lock-pin hole.
  • A device is described for locking/unlocking rotation of an eccentric bearing having a cylindrical outside surface and a cylindrical inside surface eccentric with respect to the outside surface interposed between an outside surface of a piston-pin and an inside surface of a small end hole of a connecting rod of an internal combustion engine.   • An apparatus and method for varying a compression ratio of an engine having a block and a head mounted thereto. The apparatus and method includes a cylinder having a block portion and a head portion, a piston linearly movable in the block portion of the cylinder, a cylinder plug linearly movable in the head portion of the cylinder, and a valve located in the cylinder plug and operable to provide controlled fluid communication with the block portion of the cylinder.
