Shot-noise-limited detection of absorbance changes induced by subpicojoule laser pulses in optical pump-probe experiments

We describe a high-frequency modulation and detection system capable of measuring absorbance changes {Delta}{ital A} on the order of 10{sup {minus}6} in optical pump-probe experiments using submilliwatt laser powers from a mode-locked ultrafast laser. For probe beam powers {ge}9 {mu}W, the system offers nearly shot-noise-limited performance. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital American} {ital Institute} {ital of} {ital Physics}.
