  • The original vent valves installed on the primary and secondary quench vessels have experienced extensive internal erosion. The report provides details of the engineering work that has been undertaken to overcome the problem. Modifications were made to the valves during hot commissioning in order to reduce the erosive action, but these did not produce a significant improvement. During Test Series One, an alternative valve arrangement was installed which proved successful, and identical valves will be installed at the other locations for Test Series Two. The problem of erosion of the vent valves is likely to be specific only to themore » wet ash disposal system at the Grimethorpe Facility, as a commercial plant would probably utilize a dry system without the associated cyclone blowdown and venting requirement.« less
  • The Toxic Substances Control Act Test Submissions Data base (TSCATS) was developed to make unpublished test data available to the public. The test data are submitted to the US Environmental Protection Agency by industry under the Toxic Substances Control Act. Test is broadly defined to include case reports, episodic incidents, such as spills, and formal test study presentations. The data base allows searching of test submissions according to specific chemical identity or type of study when used with an appropriate search retrieval software program. Studies are indexed under three broad subject areas: health effects, environmental effects, and environmental fate. Additionalmore » controlled vocabulary terms are assigned which describe the experimental protocol and test observations. Records identify reference information needed to locate the source document, as well as the submitting organization and reason for submission of the test data. TSCATS on magnetic is updated quarterly in March, June, September and December each year. Each update is a complete restatement of the entire data base.« less
  • The proposed Update is for Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste, Physical/Chemical Methods, SW-846, Third Edition. Attached to the report is a list of methods included in the proposed update indicating whether the method is a new method, a partially revised method, or a totally revised method. Do not discard or replace any of the current pages in the SW-846 manual until the proposed update I package is promulgated. Until promulgation of the update package, the methods in the update package are not officially part of the SW-846 manual and thus do not carry the status of EPA-approved methods. Inmore » addition to the proposed Update, six finalized methods are included for immediate inclusion into the Third Edition of SW-846. Four methods, originally proposed October 1, 1984, will be finalized in a soon to be released rulemaking. They are, however, being submitted to subscribers for the first time in the update. These methods are 7211, 7381, 7461, and 7951. Two other methods were finalized in the 2nd Edition of SW-846. They were inadvertantly omitted from the 3rd Edition and are not being proposed as new. These methods are 7081 and 7761.« less
