  • This article surveys promising offshore sites containing petroleum and natural gas deposits. Latin American output represents approximately 23% of the Free World's total offshore oil production. A recent US Geological Survey has predicted that the US outer continental shelf could contain up to 44 million bbl of undiscovered oil and 231 tcf of undiscovered natural gas. Worldwide offshore rig utilization finished at about 90% in 1984, compared with only 79% at the beginning of 1984. Gulf of Mexico rig use rose to more than 92% in 1984, and North Sea rig utilization was 94%.
  • Designs and materials for constructing an attached solar greenhouse are discussed. Alternative designs for building the greenhouse out from the south line with a minimum of vertical travel are illustrated. An 8 by 16 ft double-glazed solar greenhouse with 50% end wall glazing and 120 ft/sup 2/ south glazing can produce 4.5 x 10/sup 6/ Btu heat gain, for a greenhouse of this size, 2,400 Btu//sup 0/F of storage provided by five 55 gal water-filled drums are required. Suitable glazing materials include glass, insulating glass, acrylic, fiberglass reinforced polyester, polyethylene film, and special double glazings. Other building materials are recommended.
  • An equipment guide to underground locomotives and rail cars available from US manufacturers is presented.
  • This article is a summary of petroleum activity in Western Europe. Highlights include the fact that drilling in Norway decreased very significantly in '86 but it is projected that this activity may again show a significant increase in 1987 and 1988. French drilling decreased by 50% due to taxes, prices and the weak dollar. Holland also suffered from low oil prices and new fields developed very slowly. An area of promise is Ireland where the Irish Government has offered liberal terms and much more acreage in the Celtic Sea. A detailed map accompanies the article which shows the sites formore » all of Western Europe. This article is a survey article of petroleum activity in Eastern Europe. Particular attention is paid to the oil production of the U.S.S.R.« less
  • Integrated resource planning (IRP) is the development of a concrete set of decisions and actions. These actions are either taken or put into motion with the purpose of causing a sustainable effect on the utility's future mix of loads, resources, costs, and risks. The actions and decisions are intended to balance and integrate several diverse elements.
