  • We present a measurement of the top-quark mass in pp collisions at {radical}(s)=1.96 TeV which uses events with an inclusive signature of missing transverse energy and jets. The event selection is sensitive to tt{yields}W{sup +}bW{sup -}b{yields}l{nu}bqq{sup '}b independent of the lepton flavor and results in a large acceptance for W{yields}{tau}{nu} decays. All-hadronic tt decays and events with identified electrons or muons are vetoed to provide a statistically independent sample with respect to all previous measurements. The top-quark mass is inferred from the distribution of the scalar sum of all jet transverse energies and the missing transverse energy. Using 311 pb{supmore » -1} of integrated luminosity recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab, we measure a top-quark mass m{sub t}=172.3{sub -9.6}{sup +10.8}(stat){+-}10.8(syst) GeV/c{sup 2}. While the uncertainty on m{sub t} is larger than that of other measurements, the result is statistically uncorrelated with those of other methods and thus can help to reduce the overall m{sub t} uncertainty when combined with other existing measurements.« less
  • The authors present a measurement of the t{bar t} production cross section in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV which uses events with an inclusive signature of significant missing transverse energy and jets. This is the first measurement which makes no explicit lepton identification requirements, so that sensitivity to W {yields} {tau}{nu} decays is maintained. Heavy flavor jets from top quark decay are identified with a secondary vertex tagging algorithm. From 311 pb{sup -1} of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab they measure a production cross section of 5.8 {+-} 1.2(stat.){sub -0.7}{sup +0.9}(syst.) pb for amore » top quark mass of 178 GeV/c{sup 2}, in agreement with previous determinations and standard model predictions.« less

  • We present a measurement of the top-quark mass using a sample of tt events in 5.7 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity from pp collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron with {radical}(s)=1.96 TeV and collected by the CDF II Detector. We select events having large missing transverse energy, and four, five, or six jets with at least one jet tagged as coming from a b quark, and reject events with identified charged leptons. This analysis considers events from the semileptonic tt decay channel, including events that contain tau leptons. The measurement is based on a multidimensional template method. We fit the datamore » to signal templates of varying top-quark masses and background templates, and measure a top-quark mass of M{sub top}=172.32{+-}2.4(stat){+-}1.0(syst) GeV/c{sup 2}.« less
