  • A model was developed to estimate soil quality standards based on secondary poisoning of toppredators. Three trophic levels were considered: plants and invertebrates on the first, small birds and mammals on the second, and raptorial birds and beasts on the third trophic level. Six chemicals were selected: DDT, dieldrin, lindans, pentachlorophenol, cadmium and methyl mercury. The maximum permissible concentration of a chemical in the soil (MPC{sub soil}) was calculated with: MPC{sub soil} = NOEC{sub species of concern}/ BAF{sub food species of concern}. The BAF{sub food species of concern} is the bioaccumulation factor representing the ratio between concentration in the foodmore » of the species of concern and concentration in soil. The NOEC{sub species of concern} is the no-observed effect concentration of toppredators in the field estimated from laboratory toxicity data by application of several correction factors. Literature data were evaluated for five potentially important correction factors: caloric content and assimilation efficiency of food types, metabolic rate, pollutant assimilation efficiency and species sensitivity. BAFs and NOECs were treated as stochastic variables. It was demonstrated that species feeding on birds and small carnivorous mammals are to a higher extent exposed to contaminants than species feeding on herbivorous mammals. For highly lipophilic compounds attention should be paid to toppredators, whereas for other chemicals attention may be focused on worm-eating birds and mammals.« less
  • A gradient-flux dry deposition module was developed for use in a climatological atmospheric transport model, the Multimedia Environmental Pollutant Assessment System (MEPAS). The atmospheric pathway model computes long-term average contaminant air concentration and surface deposition patterns surrounding a potential release site incorporating location-specific dry deposition influences. Gradient-flux formulations are used to incorporate site and regional data in the dry deposition module for this atmospheric sector-average climatological model. Application of these formulations provide an effective means of accounting for local surface roughness in deposition computations.   • The need for and uses of thermodynamic and transport properties in the selection of working fluids for the vapor compression cycle and in equipment design are reviewed. A list of hydrogen-containing halocarbons, as well as their mixtures, is presented as alternatives to the environmentally harmful, fully halogenated chlorofluorocarbons. These fluids range from well-characterized, widely available refrigerants to materials available only by custom synthesis about which very little is known. Data priorities for these fluids are presented; most essential are critical point, vapor pressure, liquid density, ideal-gas heat capacity, and vapor p-V-T data. A critical need exists for these data onmore » a number of candidate working fluids in order not to lose the opportunity to select the best set of future refrigerants.« less
  • Hydrological and geochemical controls in arid environments (many mining and milling sites) work together to limit the size of groundwater plumes and can extend plume flushing times Incorporation of these concepts may support formulation of alternative end states At several DOE-LM sites, such as Mound, land and facilities have been transferred to the local community for transitioning to beneficial reuse and development. Some of the DOE-LM UMTRCA sites appear to be good candidate for brownfield reuse and serve as a resource for future employment and ongoing benefit to stakeholders and Native American Nations.
  • The paper reviews methods of documenting and tracking contract requirements and deliverables from the inception of a project through its completion. One specific system, the Technical Information Monitoring System, will be discussed in detail. Emphasis is placed on the tracking of deliverables in the form of technical reporting requirements for research and development contracts for the US Department of Energy. In addition, the paper concentrates on the application of new technologies to improve productivity and reduce overlap in energy research and development and to enhance contract documentation and accelerate the dissemination of contractor research and development reports and technical information.
