Rare Earth Ion Effects on the Pseudo-Gap in Electron-Doped Superconductors And Possible Nodeless D-Wave Gap

We report angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) studies on electron-doped cuprate superconductor Sm{sub 2-x}Ce{sub x}CuO{sub 4} (x = 0.14 and 0.18). A wide energy range scan shows clear 'waterfall' effect at an energy scale close to 500 meV which is consistent with the value found in Nd{sub 2-x}Ce{sub x}CuO{sub 4} (NCCO) but larger than that from hole-doped superconductors. High resolution results from both dopings show pseudo-gap effects that were observed in NCCO. However, the effects are found to be stronger than that observed in optimally doped NCCO. Here we have investigated the superconducting (SC) gap on hole Fermi surfaces (FSs) of optimally substituted Ba (Fe _0.65 Ru _0.35) ₂ As ₂ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (APRES) using bulk-sensitive 7 eV laser and synchrotron radiation. It was found that, whereas the gap is isotropic in the k _x - k _y plane, the gap magnitudes of two resolved hole FSs show similar k _z dependences and decrease as k _z approaches ~ 2 π/c (i.e., around the Z point), unlike the other Fe-based superconductors reported so far, where the SC gap of only one hole FS shows amore »« less

Evidence for a Nodal Energy Gap in the Iron-Pnictide Superconductor LaFePO from Penetration Depth Measurements by Scanning SQUID Susceptometry

We measure changes in the penetration depth {lambda} of the T{sub c} {approx} 6 K superconductor LaFePO. In the process, scanning SQUID susceptometry is demonstrated as a technique for accurately measuring local temperature-dependent changes in {lambda}, ideal for studying early or difficult-to-grow materials. {lambda} is found to vary linearly with temperatures from 0.36 to {approx} 2 K, with a slope of 143 {+-} 15 {angstrom}/K, suggesting line nodes in the superconducting order parameter. The linear dependence up to {approx} T{sub c}/3, similar to the cuprate superconductors, indicates well-developed nodes.
