Title: Operation of the RHIC Beam Dump Thyratron CX1575C

Abstract

Applying the knowledge gained with these tests, a procedure to allow running at design voltages was developed and successfully applied to the thyratrons SN #1630 and #1632. The procedure is based on the premise, that the reservoir heater voltage should be set to the highest level compatible with the tube hold-off voltage being maintained, since high gas pressure provides adequate plasma current and prevents ion bombardment and damage of the electrodes. This is recommended in the data sheet for the different purpose of achieving maximum rate of rise of current.
