The homoleptic complexes [Ph{sub 4}P]{sub 2}{l_brace}Co[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 4}{r_brace} and [Ph{sub 4}P]{l_brace}M[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 3}{r_brace} [ M = Co, Mn] have been structurally as well as magnetically characterized. The complexes containing {l_brace}M[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 4}{r_brace}{sup 2-} form 1-D chains, which are bridged via a common dicyanamide ligand in {l_brace}M[N(CN){sub 2}]{sub 3}{r_brace}{sup -} to form a 2-D structure. The five-atom [NCNCN]{sup -} ligands lead to a {sup 4}T{sub 1g} ground state for Co(II) which has an unquenched spin-orbit coupling that is reflected in the magnetic properties. Long-range magnetic ordering was not observed in any of these materials.

We present high-resolution measurements of the coefficient of thermal expansion {alpha}(T)={partial_derivative} ln l(T)/{partial_derivative}T of the quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) salts {kappa}-(BEDT-TTF){sub 2}X with X=Cu[N(CN){sub 2}]Cl, Cu[N(CN){sub 2}]Br and Cu(NCS){sub 2} in the temperature range T<{approx}150 K. Three distinct kinds of anomalies corresponding to different temperature ranges have been identified. These are (A) phase-transition anomalies into the superconducting (X=Cu(NCS){sub 2}, Cu[N(CN){sub 2}]Br) and antiferromagnetic (X=Cu[N(CN){sub 2}]Cl) ground state, (B) phase-transition-like anomalies at intermediate temperatures (30-50) K for the superconducting salts, and (C) kinetic, glasslike transitions at higher temperatures, i.e., (70-80) K for all compounds. Anomalous magnetoelastic behaviour near morphotropic phase boundary in ferromagnetic Tb _1-xNd _xCo ₂ system

In this study, we report a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) involved ferromagnetic system Tb _1-xNd _xCo ₂ and reveal the corresponding structural and magnetoelastic properties of this system. With high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffractometry, the crystal structure of the TbCo ₂-rich side is detected to be rhombohedral and that of NdCo ₂-rich side is tetragonal below their respective Curie temperatures T_C. The MPB composition Tb _0.35Nd _0.65Co ₂ corresponds to the coexistence of the rhombohedral phase (R-phase) and tetragonal phase ( T-phase).
