Title: Study of the Rare Hadronic Decays D + s → K +π 0, D + s → π + K 0 s and D + s → π + π 0 at BaBar

Abstract

Ds mesons are fully reconstructed from four final states using approximately 229fb -1 of data delivered by the PEP-II e +e - collider and collected by the BaBar experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Centre during the period 1999 to 2004. Measurements of the exclusive branching fractions (average over charge-conjugate decays), B, of the decays D + s → K +π 0, D + s→ π +K 0 and D + s → π +π 0 relative to the reference mode D + s → K +$$\bar{K}$$ 0 are presented.

  • This thesis illustrates a complete study of the doubly and singly Cabibbo suppressed decays D + and D s + → K + π -π +. Data for this analysis have been collected by the fixed-target high-energy photoproduction experiment FOCUS at Fermilab. The authors have selected the D + and D s + samples with cuts to obtain a sufficiently high statistics, a good signal to noise ratio and, at the same time, eliminate possible contaminations from the more copious and favored decays. The D + yield consists of 189 ± 24 events, with a signal to noise ratio ~more » 1; the D s + yield is 567 ± 31 and the signal to noise ratio is ~ 2.5. The authors have measured Γ(D + → K +π -π +)/Γ(D + → K -π +π +) = 0.0065 ± 0.0008 ± 0.004 and Γ(D s + → K +π -π +)/Γ(D s + → K +K -π +) = 0.127 ± 0.007 ± 0.014, improving the previous determinations of a factor of 2 and 5, respectively. The author has also performed a Dalitz plot analysis for both decays. The amplitude analysis for D s + → K +π -π + represents the first available measurement for this channel.« less
  • An upper limit has been extracted, at the 90% C.L, for the rare charmless hadronic B meson decay B ± → a 0(980) ±π 0, where a 0(980) ± →ηπ ± and η→γγ or η→ π +π -π 0. The analysis was based on a sample of approximately 340.7 fb -1 of data taken at the (4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e +e - collider at SLAC from May 1999 to August 2006. The sample contains (379.9 ± 4.2) million Bmore » $$\bar{B}$$ pairs.« less
  • This thesis reports the analysis of the e +e - → e +e -K S 0K ±π ± and e +e - → e +e -K +K -π +π -π 0 processes using the final dataset of the BABAR experiment located at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. From previous measurements, the K S 0K ±π ± final state is known to show a clear signal from the β c(2S) particle. This cmore » $$\bar{c}$$ state escaped detection for almost twenty years and its properties are still not well established on the experimental ground, while accurate predictions exist on the theoretical side. The e +e -→ e +e -K +K -π +π -π 0 process is first studied in this thesis. An accurate determination of the β c(2S) properties is obtained in the K S 0K ±π ± decay mode. We also report the first observation of η c(2S) and other charmonium states to the K +K -π +π -π 0 final state. The results of this thesis have been published in Physical Review D, and will be useful to test theoretical models describing the charmonium system. The thesis is organized in four chapters. The first one gives a brief introduction of the theoretical models used to describe the charmonium system. The second one discuss the current status of conventional and exotic charmonium spectroscopy, reporting recent experimental results and their interpretation. The third Chapter is devoted to describe the BABAR experiment. The analysis technique and results are described in Chapter 4. Finally, conclusions from this analysis are drawn.« less
  • Despite more than thirty years having elapsed since the discovery of CP violation, our understanding about the source and the nature of this phenomenon is still very limited. In the standard model of particle physics, CP violation is due to the presence of an non-irreducible weak phase in the Cabibbo-Kabayashi-Maskawa(CKM) matrix. Up to now, all the experimental results are in good agreement with the standard model. However, it is important for us to over-constrain the CKM quark-mixing matrix and explore the possibility of new physics beyond the standard model. The B meson provides an ideal place to measure CP violation due to its heavy mass and potentially large CP-violating effects. In particular, the angle γ of the Unitary Triangle relating the elements of the CKM matrix is extremely crucial in terms of CP violation and constraints on the new physics models. Various methods using B - → D 0K - decays have been proposed to measure based on the interference between the V cb and V ub amplitudes. Despite the simple concept, the measurement turns out to be experimentally challenging due to the small branching fraction and the small value of τ B, the amplitude ratio between the two contributing Feynman diagrams. In this thesis a novel technique to measure γ in B - → D (*) K - decay using a Dalitz plot analysis of D 0 → K{sub s}π +π - is presented. Until the turn on of LHC b [1] later in the decade, this remains the most promising method to measure γ. This thesis is roughly separated into two parts. The first part involves a study of hadron spectroscopy and the Dalitz plot analysis of the D 0→ Kmore » $$0\atop{S}$$π +π -. The second part of the thesis involves the measurement of γ in B - → D (*) K - using the results of the D 0 → K$$0\atop{S}$$π +π - dalitz plot analysis.« less
