Abstract

A crystalline article includes a single-crystal ceramic fiber, tape or ribbon. The fiber, tape or ribbon has at least one crystallographic facet along its length, which is generally at least one meter long. In the case of sapphire, the facets are R-plane, M-plane, C-plane or A-plane facets. Epitaxial articles, including superconducting articles, can be formed on the fiber, tape or ribbon.

Crystallography, morphology, and magnetic properties of Fe nanostructures on faceted {alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} m plane

The properties of iron nanostructures prepared by shallow incidence molecular beam epitaxy on faceted {alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} (1010) (m plane) are described. Depending on the angle of deposition with regard to the sapphire surface, the morphology of the structures reaches from pearl-necklet-like strung nanodrops to laced nanowires. Crystallographic measurements reveal at least four epitaxial close to (211)-oriented twins. Magnetization measurements performed at room temperature in a vibrating sample magnetometer and magneto-optical Kerr rotation measurements reveal an easy axis of magnetization close to the facet ridges. Still, the shape of the hysteresis loops depends strongly on the morphology of the samples.more »« less

Success with organometallics, citrates, and sintered powder compacts has resulted in two approaches for further development of strain tolerant conductors. They are, thin fibers and tapes, and bulk monoliths. A thorough understanding of the phase relationships in high temperature superconductors, including those phase relationships exhibited by the oxygen sublattice has been developed. Investigation of the heat exchange processes during growth of basal-plane-faceted sapphire ribbons by the Stepanov method

A three-dimensional model is proposed for the global heat exchange during growth of basal-plane-faceted sapphire ribbons. The model is based on the method for solving three-dimensional problems of radiative heat transfer in complex regions with diffusely and specularly reflecting boundaries. The temperature distributions in the ribbon and elements of the thermal zone are investigated. It is shown that the developed model correctly reflects the main features of the processes of heat exchange in the crystallization setup and makes it possible to purposefully modify the thermal zone.

This paper discusses a process for producing an electrical conductor. It comprises providing at least one sintered superconducting ceramic fiber having a metallization coating sintered thereon; providing at least one composite sheet having a cladding metal outer layer and a conductive adherent inner layer; manipulating at least one composite sheet to provide generally opposing inner layers of the adherent; feeding at least one ceramic fiber between the opposing layers; and sandwiching the fed fiber(s) between the opposing layers to form an electrical conductor.
