Title: Kinetic hydricity of transition-metal hydrides toward trityl cation

Abstract

The kinetics of hydride transfer from a series of metal hydrides (MH) to Ph{sub 3}C{sup +}BF{sub 4}{sup -} (producing Ph{sub 3}-CH and M - FBF{sub 3}) have been studied by stopped-flow methods in CH{sub 2}Cl{sub 3} solution. Second-order rate constants at 25{degree}C span 5 orders of magnitude in kinetic hydricity, ranging from k = 5.0 x 10{sup 1}M{sup -1} s{sup -1} for HMn-(CO){sub 5} to k = 4.6 x 10{sup 5} M{sup -1} s{sup -1} for trans-HMo(CO){sub 2}-(PMe{sub 3})Cp. 24 refs., 1 tab.
