Justifying the use of 13Cr steels for corrosive CO{sub 2} operations

Identifying the proper completion materials for a new or existing project is based on corrosion engineering and project economics. This paper reviews the metallurgical and corrosion engineering behind selecting 13Cr tubing for sweet and sour service. A summary of the most current service limitations in sweet and sour oilfield environments, including classical reference diagrams, are presented. The service recommendations are supported by literature case histories from around the world. A brief summary of economic evaluation techniques for justifying the use of 13Cr over coated carbon steel is also presented. This paper is designed to be a reference for developing in-house 13Cr assessment procedures.
