A study of excitation of HeI and HeII levels in the buffer space of a pulsed gas-discharge capillary
- Institute of Semiconductor Physics, Novosibirsk (Russian Federation)
Plasma parameters in the buffer space of a powerful capillary discharge are studied by measuring emission spectra of HeI (at {lambda}=587.6, 447.1, 501.6, and 471.3 nm) and HeII (at {lambda}=468.6 and 320.3 nm). It is found that gas-dynamic plasma expansion from this discharge space into the buffer zone is accompanied by interaction of the discharge plasma with the gas environment and population inversion between levels in HeI (n = 3,4) and HeII (n = 4,5) in a certain space-time interval. The main formation mechanism of the nonequilibrium level population is associated with resonant pumping and electronic deexcitation of the levels in a photoionized medium that is produced in the buffer space owing to the transport of resonance radiation of the capillary discharge plasma in the lines of HeII. 6 refs., 5 figs.
