Abstract

Broadband solar radiometer data collected at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) Central Facility during the ARM Enhanced Shortwave Experiment (ARESE) exhibits inconsistencies and inter-calibration offsets. This report examines these problems, and in some cases, suggests error sources and possible solutions. The data discussed here covers the period from September 28, 1995, through October 30, 1995.

The surface inferred cloud optical properties from a multifilter rotating shadowband radiometer have been validated against the in situ measurements during the second ARM Enhanced Shortwave Experiment (ARESE II) field campaign at the ARM South Great Plains (SGP) site. On the basis of eight effective radius profiles measured by the in situ Forward Spectra Scattering Probe (FSSP), our retrieved cloud effective radii for single-layer warm water clouds agree well with in situ measurements, within 5.5%. Well-known cloud-screening algorithms, which are designed to remove cloud-contaminated aerosol optical depths (AOD) from AOD measurements, have shown great performance at many middle-to-low latitude sites around the world. However, they may occasionally fail under challenging observational conditions, such as when the sun is low (near the horizon) or when optically thin clouds with small spatial inhomogeneity occur. Several recent studies have indicated that cloudy atmospheres may absorb significantly more solar radiation than currently predicted by models. The magnitude of this excess atmospheric absorption, is about 50% more than currently predicted and would have major impact on our understanding of atmospheric heating. The objectives of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Enhanced Shortwave Experiment (ARESE) are to directly measure clear and cloudy sky shortwave atmospheric absorption and to quantify any absorption found in excess of model predictions. We undertake detailed model comparisons to near-infrared and total solar flux time series observed by surface and airborne radiometric instruments during the ARESE campaign. Model clear-sky absorption biases generally fall within the range of uncertainty generated by sample size, and assumptions of aerosol properties and surface albedo. Multi-Filter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer (MFRSR) retrievals of total column aerosol, water vapor, and ozone during the Arm Enhanced Shortwave Experiment (ARESE)

The ARESE provided an opportunity to compare MFRSR retrievals of total column aerosol optical depth, total column water vapor, and total column ozone with independent measurements of the same quantities during this campaign in the fall of 1995. MFRSR ozone was compared to ozonesondes that reached altitudes of at least 30 km. MFRSR water vapor was compared to microwave radiometer water vapor on several clear days during the campaign.
