Title: Assessment of the market potential for the brushless doubly-fed machine (BDFM). Final report

Abstract

This report was developed to gain an insight into the potential market for the brushless doubly fed machine (BDFM). The BDFM represents a motor technology which has no known equivalent competition in the marketplace. As a result, all the market analyses carried out, for the BDFM, use current technology motors to gauge performance comparisons in the various market segments. The analyses show that significant opportunities exist for BDFM applications in the adjustable speed drives (ASD) as well as the variable speed generation (VSG) categories. Further opportunities also exist in electric vehicle (EV) technology that is forthcoming. In the ASD sector a 75 hp general purpose pump is identified as the first application area for the BDFM, while a 200 kW system is recommended for the VSG application. Specific target market requirements for an electric motor and BDFM application potential in future target markets are also analyzed. The format of the report (i.e. broad and fine market segmentation, and market requirements analyses) represents a framework that equipment manufacturers could use to address specific target markets and develop strategies to meet customer expectations in each of these segments.   • This report covers the investigations into the control aspects of a variable-speed generation (VSG) system using a brushless double-fed generator excited by a series-resonant converter. The brushless double-fed machine comprises two sets of stator 3-phase systems which are designed with common windings. The rotor is a cage rotor resembling the low-cost and robust squirrel cage of a conventional induction machine. The system was actually designed and set up in the Energy Laboratory of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Oregon State University. The series-resonant converter designed to achieve effective control for variable-speed generation with the brushless doubly-fed generatormore » was adequate in terms of required time response and regulation as well as in providing for adequate power quality. The three elements of the VSG controller, i.e., voltage or reactive power controller, the efficiency maximizer and the stabilizer, could be designed using conventional microprocessor elements with a processing time well within the time period required for sampling the variables involved with executing the control tasks. The report treats in detail the stability problem encountered in running the machine at certain speed regions, even if requirements for steady-state stability are satisfied. In this unstable region, shut down of the VSG system is necessary unless proper stabilization controls are provided for. The associated measures to be taken are presented. 10 refs., 24 figs.« less
  • Since the inception of the BDFM development program in 1989, the value of BDFM technology has become apparent. The BDFM provides for adjustable speed, synchronous operation while keeping costs associated with the required power conversion equipment lower than in competing technologies. This provides for an advantage in initial as well as maintenance expenses over conventional drive system. Thus, the BDFM enables energy efficient, adjustable speed process control for applications where established drive technology has not been able to deliver satisfactory returns on investment. At the same time, the BDFM challenges conventional drive technologies in established markets by providing for improvedmore » performance at lower cost. BDFM converter rating is kept at a minimum, which significantly improves power quality at the utility interface over competing power conversion equipment. In summary, BDFM technology can be expected to provide significant benefits to utilities as well as their customers. This report discusses technical research and development activities related to Phase 3 of the Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine System Development Program, including work made possible by supplemental funds for laboratory improvement and prototype construction. Market research for the BDFM was provided by the College of Business at Oregon State University; market study results will be discussed in a separate report.« less
  • Renewable energy sources have long been recognized as attractive alternatives to the conventional generation of electric power. One of the great challenges is to convert the intermittent and varying energy of these renewable sources into electric power in an efficient and effective way. Some of the emerging technologies involve mechanical to electrical energy conversion, which has usually been accomplished through the use of synchronous machines operating at a constant input speed and constant frequency. The requirement for constant input speed is often incompatible with the desire for efficient energy capture and imposes difficult control problems on the conversion equipment. Amore » more natural approach to the conversion of intermittent and varying energy sources is a conversion system which accepts a variable mechanical input speed and produces the grid required constant frequency and voltage directly. This program has investigated the doubly-fed machine as a potential candidate to convert a varying input speed to a constant frequency, constant voltage output. Although this work is applicable to all rotating generation configurations with speed dependent efficiency, special emphasis was placed on hydro and wind power sources. 20 figs., 8 tabs.« less
