The effect of alternative fuels on the stability and lubricity of crankcase lubricants. Final report, September 1992--September 1993
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to study the effect of alternative fuels on the functioning of crankcase lubricants with these three main goals: Develop simple, rapid test protocols to evaluate the influence of alternative fuels on the stability and lubricity of lubricants under conditions simulating engine operation. The objective is to have these test protocols serve industry as a precursor evaluation procedure before expensive engine tests are conducted. The reliability of these test procedures to predict the influence of additives on lubricant performance under actual operating conditions will be determined by comparison of these test results with available engine and fleet tests. Use the developed test procedures to evaluate commercially available lubricants for applications with alternative fuels and determine the influence of various bearing materials, including conventional steel as well as advanced ceramic materials. Use the test procedures to evaluate classes of lubricants and lubricant additives as well as fuel additives, and develop lubricants and additives for comparability with specific alternative fuels. Test procedures have been developed to produce lubricant fractions which can be caused by contact with alternative fuels in the crankcase and the area of the fuel injector. A number of alternative fuels have been suggested and/or tested for use in mass transit buses. This project, a cooperative effort of researchers at Michigan State University and Wayne State University, is assessing the current status of the alternative fuel possibilities. In phase one, the study reviewed the literature on alternative fuels for buses. The first review concentrated on public transit agencies that are currently using alternative fuels. The second review covered alternative fuel research and development reports. Combustion and emissions characterization of pelletized coal fuels. Final technical report, September 1, 1992--August 31, 1993
The feasibility of converting waste preparation plant coal streams into marketable fuels with good combustion and emissions properties has been investigated in this project. Coal pellets containing both hydrated lime and limestone as sorbents were made from a flotation column waste feedstock under a related Illinois Clean Coal Institute project. These pellets, which contain sorbent with Ca/S ratio varying from 0.8 to 2.4 were successfully burnt in a 4-inch internal diameter circulating fluidized bed combustor. Development and use of an apparatus to measure the dynamic surface properties of coal-water slurry fuels for applications to atomization characteristics. Final report, September 1, 1992--December 31, 1993
Experiments were conducted to measure the dynamic surface tension of coal-water slurry (CWS) mixtures containing various types of surfactants and with varied coal loadings. The dynamic properties will affect CWS fuel atomization, which constitutes highly dynamic processes. A maximum air bubble pressure technique measured the dynamic surface tension. The dynamic surface tension, which can be much higher than the corresponding static surface tension, was measured for the CWS made from the coal mined from the Upper Elkhorn seam in Virginia. This project was initiated in September 1989 as a three year project to develop and demonstrate Intelligent Distributed Control (IDC) for Nuclear Power Plants. There were two primary goals of this research project. The first goal was to combine diagnostics and control to achieve a highly automated power plant as described by M.A. Schultz. The second goal was to apply this research to develop a prototype demonstration on an actual power plant system, the EBR-2 steam plant. Baseline projection: Alternative scenario analysis-optimistic gas supply and constrained energy demand scenarios, 1993 edition. Final report, January 1992-June 1993
The purpose of the report is to investigate two alternative energy scenarios in conjunction with the production of the 1993 Edition of the Baseline Projection. Recent history has shown a trend towards lower natural gas prices and increased energy efficiencies. While the baseline projection reflects these trends, the alternative scenarios are designed to explore the implications of a more extreme evolution of each of these trends.
