Title: Energy and the environment. Final report

Abstract

Work on the `Energy and the Environment` project has been focused on completion of two interrelated efforts: (1) development, production, and installation of energy related exhibits in the Ecology and Environment gallery, and (2) creation and implementation of the `Energy Backpack` program. The Energy exhibits have been available to over 1.5 million visitors since the opening of the new St. Louis Science Center. The `Energy Backpack` program will be implemented with students, teachers, and family groups this fall.

  • This report presents an overview of the analytical framework and quantitative methods used in the IIASA case studies on Regional Energy/Environment Management and Planning. Its purpose is to summarize the structure of the models, to provide a complete listing of the sources of more detailed model and data descriptions, and to indicate how the models are integrated to provide a foundation for regional energy/environment policy maker analysis. The audience for the report includes managers, planners, technical advisors, and modelers. The set of models used in the research project encompasses socioeconomic links to the energy system; energy demand in the residential, more » industrial, commercial/service, agricultural and transportation sectors; the energy supply sector, environmental impacts associated with the energy system; and policy makers' preferences. The report gives a brief description of the purpose and general structure of each model, data requirements, examples of input and output, and model limitations. As a whole, the models integrate information about energy flows in a region to simulate the energy system and its relationship to other regional variables, e.g., demographic and economic trends and the environment.« less
  • This study compares alternative dairy manure management systems operated under full scale commercial conditions. The study investigates weight of manure handled per cow per year, labor and energy requirements, effect on the environment, nutrient conservation, corn silage production and total annual operating costs. The dairy production facility used was a confinement stall barn at the Agway Farm Research Center, Tully, New York. Provisions were made to handle the manure from the barn in three ways: (1) directly into a spreader for daily spreading, (2) by gravity into a liquid manure storage tank for spring application and immediate plow down, (3)more » hydraulic ram to a roof-covered above-ground manure storage for spring and fall spreading. Results of the study show that a manure storage system can reduce annual labor requirements by 65 percent and fuel requirement by 60 percent or more, compared to daily spreading.« less
  • A literature survey to determine the state-of-the-art of materials in a high temperature Na and vacuum environment as applied to thermal energy storage was conducted. It was found that little information exists for materials or heat pipes in the high temperature (1400/sup 0/K) Na or vacuum environments. Program recommendations are to perform life tests on candidate materials and Na heat pipes with post test corrosion analyses. Na wicking parameter must be determined experimentally for accurate heat pipe design.
  • This is the final report on a project to design, develop, and test an information transfer system to support energy-environment policy making and implementation decisions in Region VIII by Federal, State and local officials, and to serve the information needs on energy-environment issues of state agencies, legislatures, 208 planning agencies, Indian reservations, energy-impacted communities, and other user groups. The report contains an analysis of user needs; definition of system functions; description of system operations, storage media and organizational arrangement; steps and costs projected for implementation; monitoring and accounting procedures; and results of the system test.
  • The goal of this project was to develop alternate control modules (lap units) for the Energy-Environment Simulator. These control modules were designed to provide a quicker learning curve for participants, to develop a better understanding of the quantifiable aspects of the simulation, and to introduce conservation-oriented variables into the modeling and decision-making process. An important aspect of this work is application of the idea of distributed computation to interactive simulation. This approach permits low cost modification of the character of the simulation at any time in the life of the instrument. It also permits several different sets of variables tomore » be considered at the discretion of the presentor. The conservation units presented in this report are representative of the potential of this approach.« less
