STIP Managers Teleconference

January 11, 2006

12:00 – 1:00 pm ET

2006 STIP Meeting (Kathy Waldrop):  The 2006 STIP Meeting will be held at the Four Points by Sheraton Downtown Chicago (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/fourpoints/search/hotel_detail.html?propertyID=1592).  We checked a number of downtown hotels and this hotel could accommodate us for the Week of April 24, and gave us the best price and is fortunately a great location.  We will begin our meetings the afternoon of April 25, starting with a STIP Orientation, followed by a DOE federal-employee-only meeting and a DOE contractor-only meeting.  This way, Tuesday am travel will be possible for some attendees. There are 15 rooms only for Monday night right now, but more may be added if necessary.  The STIP Meeting itself will be held Wednesday and Thursday; 40 rooms have been reserved for Tues-Thursday nights.  Some spots are available for Friday and Saturday.  The per diem is $152/night for Chicago; details will be on the STIP Home Page.  The number of the hotel is 1-800-368-7764.  Make sure you mention the DOE STIP Meeting to get the government rate. The deadline for reservations is March 14.  Parking at the hotel is $28/day for self-parking; valet parking is$38/day.

NOTE: For individuals flying to Chicago, either O’Hare or Midway airports are options. They are only about five minutes different in terms of time to our hotel. Both airports have many options for public transportation to the hotel. Jannean Elliott will add links on the STIP Home Page later today.

Argonne may offer a tour featuring the Advanced Photon Source, depending on interest. ANL will look into transportation options.  If you are interested, let Sharon Jordan know.  A tour would last about an hour, and it could take place Tuesday morning.  Let OSTI know by Thursday of next week.  Argonne is about 40 minutes south of the hotel, so the entire tour would take about three hours.

OSTI would love to hear from potential presenters.  Contact OSTI with your ideas. Potential topics may include: legacy documents; site updates; etc.

Harvesting (Jannean Elliott):  Some changes in E-Link caused a few harvesting problems last fall. It’s been a struggle to resolve them, but they’re now solved.  Right now, Idaho, SLAC, and Sandia are successfully testing.  That makes nine labs that are harvesting. Non-harvesters are invited to contact Jannean to get started.  UTF-8 character encoding will be the standard for special characters outside the ASCII character set.

Science Research Connection (SRC) – (Kathy Waldrop/Judy Gilmore): Some sites are heavy users of SRC; others are not. More information about the product will be sent out to encourage more use of SRC.  For documents requested via SRC that currently reside at OSTI in hard copy, OSTI is contacting the submitting site requesting secondary sensitivity reviews based on post-9/11.

Miscellaneous (All):

·         The Science Information Advisory Board is looking at creating some new directives; they are almost ready for RevCom.  Sharon will send us information before it goes to RevCom for the review and comment period.  We expect that there will be an overarching policy Order; nothing earth-shattering, but it will boost the importance of STI within DOE.

·         There will be a Science.gov poster session at the upcoming AAAS meeting.  Walt Warnick will be a speaker at the meeting.  It’s in St. Louis this year.  Science.gov 3.0 was released last fall.
