Presently, systems and equipment within a nuclear power plant are classified as safety or non-safety related systems and equipment. After the TMI-2 accident, it was clear that several systems and equipment important to safety were not designed, fabricated, and maintained at the level equivalent to their safety importance. The classification methodology and examples used in this paper could assist in understanding such complex issues as well as identifying such system equipment S/E.
