Ion-source and ion-accelerator development at Los Alamos
Intense, low-emittance ion beam generation and acceleration is a primary, continuing research and development activity in the Accelerator Technology Division of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA. The types and characteristics of ion source, extraction, and beam-transport systems that we have tested and some of the improvements made to the design and simulation tools for components of injector systems are described. Acceleration of low-velocity ions has been revolutionized by the radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator, introduced in the USSR, pioneered at Los Alamos in the USA, and now under intense development around the world. Recent experimental results and extensions of design capabilities at Los Alamos are discussed.
