Experimental and theoretical studies of radiationless transitions in isolated'' naphthalene were carried out. The results indicate that the internal conversion to the ground state dominates over intersystem crossing at high excess energies, and that rapid vibrational energy redistribution does not take place after excitation. A study of isotope effect on intersystem crossing in condensed phase suggests that the deuteration enhancement of intersystem crossing may indeed be related to the presence of a higher triplet state which is nearly degenerate to the lowest excited singlet state. Evidence is obtained indicating that the radiative lifetime of the lowest triplet state is considerably longer for predeuterated aromatic hydrocarbons than for the corresponding preprotonated compounds.
