Title: Effects of rebar and concrete construction joints on the migration of 4 M HNO{sub 3} in concrete test cylinders

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/10102789· OSTI ID:10102789

This report describes experiments designed to test the effects of rebar and concrete cold joints on the migration of 4M HNO{sub 3}. Worst case conditions were used in these tests to determine rebar and cold joint effects on acid migration and concrete degradation. These conditions include: (1) a 1 inch diameter hole directly over the rebar/cold joint to simulate a leak, (2) a nitric acid concentration of 4 molar, (3) a continuous supply of fresh acid contacting the rebar/cold joint, and (4) a continuous agitation of the acid caused by stirring. These unrealistic test, conditions were used to intentionally cause as much concrete damage as possible in the short time required to perform the test (4--6 months).
