Abstract

A method for converting sulfur dioxide and/or nitrogen oxide gases to acid mist and or particle aerosols is disclosed in which the gases are passed through a streamer corona discharge zone having electrodes of a wire-cylinder or wire-plate geometry.

A pulse-energized electron reactor which utilizes pulsed streamer corona has been developed for the combined removal of SO/sub 2/, NO/sub x/, and particles from effluent gases. In the pulse-energized electron reactor process, fast-rising narrow high-voltage pulses are superimposed on a dc-bias voltage and applied to a nonuniform electric field geometry to generate pulsed streamer corona. The pulsed streamer corona produces energetic free electrons, which dissociate gas molecules, forming radicals. These radicals cause chemical reactions that convert SO/sub 2/ and NO/sub x/ into acid mists and/or solids, which can be removed from the gas stream by conventional means. Global warming, air pollution and acid rain are now recognized as serious environmental problems. SO{sub 2} and NO{sub x} causing acid rain are emitted from many sources, including coal-burning power plants, iron and steel plants, paper mills, and automobile exhaust. The most common process for DeSO{sub 2} is absorption using lime or limestone which requires disposal of gypsum and treatment of waste water, and the most advanced DeNO{sub x} process is selective catalytic reduction using expensive catalyst. Two properties of energetic electrons in gas, their high specific ionization and their production of radicals and other chemically active specie, have promising applications to the cleanup of flue gas from coal combustion.
