Abstract

A series of wind velocity measurements upwind and downwind of the MOD-OA wind turbine at Clayton, New Mexico, was used to determine some of the characteristics of wakes within approximately two blade diameters of the machine. The magnitudes and shapes of the velocity profiles downwind of the turbine were compared with results obtained from a model. Generally good agreement was obtained at speeds well below the rated speed of the MOD-OA, but the results were not as satisfactory for higher values.

The wake of the MOD-0A1 wind turbine at Clayton, New Mexico has been measured using a vertical plane array of anemometers in a crosswind plane at a distance of two rotor diameters directly downwind of the turbine. Rotor blade vortices were well mixed into the wake turbulence and were not separately detectable. Wake swirl about the along-wind axis had a value not greater than 0.025 rad/s. Data from a group of three MOD-2 wind turbines and two meteorological towers at Goodnoe Hills were analyzed to evaluate turbine power output and wake effects (losses in power production due to operation of upwind turbines), and atmospheric factors influencing them. Wind data collected at nine meteorological towers at the Goodnoe Hills MOD-2 wind turbine site were analyzed to characterize the wind flow over the site both in the absence and presence of wind turbine wakes. Examination, evaluation, and repair of laminated wood blades after service on the Mod-OA wind turbine

As a result of about 7 years of effort at the NASA Lewis Research Center, laminated wood blades were designed, fabricated, and installed on a 200-kW wind turbine (Mod-OA). The machine uses a two-blade rotor with a diameter of 38.1 m (125 ft). Each blade weighs less than 1361 kg (3000 lb). After operating in the field, two blade sets were returned for inspection.
