Abstract

Preliminary results are presented for the data taken by the MARK II and MAC collaborations at the PEP storage ring. Results include measurements of QED processes, limits on the weak couplings g/sub V/ and g/sub A/, limits on anomalous lepton production, the measurement of the tau lifetime, scale violation in inclusive hadron production, Monte Carlo independent tests of QCD using energy-energy correlations and single jet energy moments, measurements of the properties of three jet events, and measurements of proton, neutral kaon, lambda and proton pair yields.

Recent results from the MAC and MARK II detectors at PEP

Data from PEP are presented for the MAC and MARK II detectors. All data are at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV and correspond to a data set varying from 15 to 30 pb/sup -1/. R = sigma/sub hadronic//sigma/sub ..mu mu../ is presented by both groups, and inclusive momentum distributions (S(d sigma/dx)) for SPEAR and PEP energies are presented by the MARK II. The S(d sigma/dx) distributions exhibit sizeable scaling violations. Both groups have measured energy-energy correlations. Recent results from Mark II at SPEAR and PEP

Three results are presented: (1) The semi-leptonic branching ratio of the ..lambda../sub c/ has been measured at SPEAR to be B(..lambda../sub c//sup +/ ..-->.. e/sup +/X) = (4.5 +- 1.7)%. (2) Properties of tau-pair production have been measured at PEP at square root S = 29 GeV: sigma/sup tau tau//sigma/sup QED/ = 0.97 +- 0.05 +- 0.06; the forward-backward asymmetry is A/sub tau tau/ = (-3.5 +- 5.0)%; inclusive branching ratios are B(tau ..-->.. 1 Prong) = (86 +- 4)%, B(tau ..-->.. 3 Prongs) = (14 +- 4)%, B(tau ..-->.. 5 Prongs) < 0.6% (95% C.L.). Results obtained at PEP by the MARK II, MAC and DELCO collaborations in the past year are reviewed. They include QED tests, measurements of tau lepton properties, charm and bottom fragmentation functions, scaling violations, energy correlations and the total hadronic cross section.

During the past year, the MAC collaboration continued accumulating data at PEP and published several results. Included in the results are the lifetime measurement of b quarks; the observation of electroweak interference effects using Bhabba, ..mu mu.., and tau tau scattering, a precise measurement of R, observations of direct photons, and a study of energy-energy correlations in multihadron events. For MkII/SLC, a vertex detector system chamber using proportional drift tubes is under construction.The Tagged Photon Spectrometer group has published results and is preparing a new experiment, E-691, to be run in January, 1985. Recent results from PEP are presented. In electroweak interactions the measured charge asymmetries for ee..--> mu mu..,tau tau, and ee are reported.
