Abstract

Sampling and analysis was undertaken to characterize and quantify particulate, organic and inorganic chemical concentrations in gaseous effluents downstream of an afterburner (AFB) or stack air addition (SAA) system in a cupola at the Tioga Casting Company in Owego, New York. The US Environmental Protection Agency/Industrial Environmental Research Laboratory (EPA/IERL) Level 1 environmental assessment procedures were used to determine if the level of pollutants present differed when using the AFB versus the SAA control device for reduction of carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations.

Based on a careful analysis and evaluation of the data gathered in this research it can be stated conclusively that the use of a Stack Air device to replace the afterburner in a production cupola resulted in a lower mass of total particulates under all cupola operating procedures. There was no statistically significant change in the level of respirable or organic materials in the cupola effluent regardless of the method used to control the concentration of carbon monoxide in the cupola off-gases.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Emission Standards Division (ESD) is investigating iron and steel foundries to identify and quantify hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) emitted from cupolas; electric arc furnaces; and pouring, cooling and shakedown operations of sand mold casting processes. The Waupaca Foundry, located in Tell City, Indiana, uses a baghouse and was the subject of this test program. Technical Report

During the calendar year 1980 progress was made on the field demonstration of the stack air device applied to production cupolas. Two stack air devices were designed, installed, and preliminary tests were undertaken. The basic design for the third installation was completed. Production slow downs delayed one installation and the second installation was completed on a large cupola to control puffing. The testing program on all installations will be carried out in 1981 as called for in the contract. It is expected that the project can be brought to a successful conclusion within the next year.
