Title: Polarization Transfer in Wide-Angle Compton Scattering and Single-Pion Photoproduction from the Proton

Abstract

Wide-angle exclusive Compton scattering and single-pion photoproduction from the proton have been investigated via measurement of the polarization transfer from a circularly polarized photon beam to the recoil proton. The WACS polarization transfer was analyzed at an incident photon energy of 3.7 GeV at a proton scattering angle of θ^P_cm = 70°. The longitudinal transfer K_LL, measured to be 0.645 ± 0.059 ± 0.048, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic, has the same sign as predicted for the reaction mechanism in which the photon interacts with a single quark carrying the spin of the proton. However, the observed value is ~3 times larger than predicted by the GPD-based calculations, which indicates a significant unknown contribution to the scattering amplitude.

Measurements of Compton Scattering on the Proton at 2 - 6 GeV

Similar to elastic electron scattering, Compton Scattering on the proton at high momentum transfers(and high p⊥) can be an effective method to study its short-distance structure. An experiment has been carried out to measure the cross sections for Real Compton Scattering (RCS) on the proton for 2.3-5.7 GeV electron beam energies and a wide distribution of large scattering angles. Wide-Angle Compton Scattering (WACS) on the proton is a powerful and under utilized probe of the transverse structure of the nucleon, which is complementary to high-$$Q^{2}$$ elastic electron-nucleon scattering. Photoproduction of e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} pairs at small angles is investigated as a tool to determine the functions f{sub 1} and f{sub 2} entering the real-photon forward Compton scattering amplitude. The method is based on an interference of the Bethe-Heitler and the virtual Compton scattering mechanisms, generating an azimuthal asymmetry in the e{sup +} versus e{sup {minus}} yield. Proton Compton Scattering in the Wide-angle Regime

Compton scattering on the proton in the wide-angle regime (WACS), in which the kinematic variables s, -t and -u are large on the hadronic scale, is a powerful and, until quite recently, under-utilized probe of nucleon structure. Results from recent Jefferson Lab measurements on both the spin-averaged cross section over a broad kinematic range and polarization observables at a single kinematic point will be presented. These results confirm the powerful role of WACS in determining dominant reaction mechanisms in exclusive hard reactions in the few GeV domain.
