Studies of Magnetically Focused Electrostatic Mirror I. Experimental Test of the First Order Properties
- Univ. of Chicago, IL (United States)
We have designed and built such a test system and it is based upon the use of the two focusing elements described above placed in series. We place a source of electrons in a region of uniform magnetic field and produce a focus at a distance L. The electrons continue to move in the same uniform magnetic field but in this second region we also establish a retarding electrostatic field to refocus the electrons in the same plane as the first focus. In principle the total aberration at this second focus should then be zero.
