The Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer, or BLIP, is a practical facility for the economical production of significant quantities of medically useful isotopes that would not otherwise be available. The purpose of the BLIP is to utilize the excess capacity of an existing 200-MeV proton linear accelerator to produce relatively large amounts of radionuclides for medical applications and to evaluate the utility of spallation reactions induced by accelerators as a practical source of such isotopes. The upgrade of the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP) and the BNL Linac

An upgrade project was recently completed on the 200 MeV H{sup -} linac and the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP) in order to improve radioisotope production capacity and reliability. The average beam current has increased from 60 {mu}A to 150 {mu}A. The increased average current is the result of increases in peak current, from 25 mA to 37 mA, pulse repetition rate, from 5 to 7.5 Hz, and pulse width, from 500 to 530 ps. To achieve this performance the 35 keV, 750 keV and 200 MeV beam transport were improved, the RF transmission lines and RF power supplies replaced.more »« less

Upgrade of the Brookhaven 200 MeV linac

The Brookhaven 200 MeV linac serves as the injector for the AGS Booster, as well as delivering beam to the Biomedical Isotope Resource Center. During the past year, many linac systems have been upgraded to allow operation at 2.5 times higher average current (150 {mu}A). This was achieved by an increase in rep-rate from 5 to 7.5 Hz, an increase in beam current from 25 mA to 37 mA, and a slight increase in pulse width to {approximately}530 {mu}s. New newtron time-of-flight (NTOF) facilities at the Brookhaven 200-MeV Linac

The installation of a new beam chopper and radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) preinjector (750 keV) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) 200-MeV Linac will enable single micropulse selection (pulse width <1 ns) with periods ranging from 400 ns to 10 ..mu..s. The standard micropulse intensity is 1.2 X 10/sup 9/ p..mu.. pulse with dc-average beam currents of 50 nA-1 ..mu..A routinely available. The NTOF facilities consists of 30-100 meter flight paths at angles of 0, 12, 30, 45, 90, and 135/degree/.
