Compositional Exploration of Additively Manufactured Ultra-High-Temperature Ceramic Composites for Use in Concentrated Solar Power Plant Heat Exchangers

The DOE has research interest in new technologies for high temperature concentrated solar power plants. Our project this summer was to explore the use of additively manufactured ultra-high-temperature ceramics in a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger would transfer heat between a molten chloride salt and supercritical CO₂. We selected 22 compositions to test and were able to mix 14 of these compositions. We sintered these compositions using pressureless sintering and direct current sintering. We also conducted high temperature TGA on some ceramic samples. Additive Manufacturing for Cost Efficient Production of Compact Ceramic Heat Exchangers and Recuperators

An additive manufacture technique known as laminated object manufacturing (LOM) was used to fabricate compact ceramic heat exchanger prototypes. LOM uses precision CO2 laser cutting of ceramic green tapes, which are then precision stacked to build a 3D object with fine internal features. Modeling was used to develop prototype designs and predict the thermal response, stress, and efficiency in the ceramic heat exchangers. Ceramic TPMS heat exchangers can operate at higher temperatures and pressures with superior performance and increased operating efficiencies compared to metal heat exchangers. Abstract An additively manufactured reaction‐bonded silicon carbide ceramic composite is fabricated using a bimodal powder feedstock and the binder‐jetting printing technique. On fabricating, the ceramic is investigated to report its composition, mechanical, and thermal properties at room temperature and high temperatures (up to 750). The ceramic has a density of 2.76 g/cc, and shows a hardness of 21.74 GPa, and a flexure strength of 207.5 MPa at room temperature. The project involved an innovative method of lowering energy costs of manufacturing ceramic products by substituting traditional raw materials with waste glass.
