Final Report for Grant BES ER-15522. Actinide Transition-Metal Chalcogenides and Pnictides
- Northwestern Univ., Evanston, IL (United States)
In essence, we have contributed significantly to the solid-state chemistry of thorium, uranium, and neptunium, with specific emphasis on the chalcogenides of these elements. The thorium and uranium chemistry was done at Northwestern University; that of neptunium was done in collaboration with Dr. Lynda Soderholm at Argonne National Laboratory. Despite the difficulties of synthesizing neptunium compounds in the environment at Argonne National Laboratory we initiated a solid-state research effort that has resulted in the publication of 10 papers on neptunium chemistry. We have demonstrated that the solid-state chemistry of neptunium, though sometimes resembling analogous uranium chemistry and sometimes resembling analogous plutonium chemistry, has a unique chemistry of its own.
