Deep traps in GaAs/InGaAs quantum wells and quantum dots, studied by noise spectroscopy

Remotely doped In{sub 0.35}Ga{sub 0.65}As layers of different coverages 6, 9, 11, and 13 ML were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (100) GaAs. Quantum dot (QD) nucleation was observed in situ by reflection high-energy electron diffraction at 8 ML growth of In{sub 0.35}Ga{sub 0.65}As, while for 6 ML, only two-dimensional (2D) growth was observed. Atomic force microscopy, low temperature photoluminescence, and Hall effect measurements confirmed this transition from 2D to three-dimensional growth. Higher-order spin-noise spectroscopy of atomic spins in fluctuating external fields

Here, we discuss the effect of external noisy magnetic fields on mesoscopic spin fluctuations that can be probed in semiconductors and atomic vapors by means of optical spin-noise spectroscopy. We also show that conventional arguments of the law of large numbers do not apply to spin correlations induced by external fields, namely, the magnitude of the 4th-order spin cumulant grows as ~N² with the number N of observed spins, i.e., it is not suppressed in comparison to the 2nd-order cumulant. 'Giant' multishell CdSe nanocrystal quantum dots with supporessed blinking: novel fluorescent probes for real-time detection of single-molecule events

We reported for the first time that key nanocrystal quantum dot (NQD) optical properties-quantum yield, photobleaching and blinking-can be rendered independent ofNQD surface chemistry and environment by growth of a very thick, defect-free inorganic shell. Here, we show the precise shell-thickness dependence of these effects. We demonstrate that 'giant-shell' NQDs can be largely non-blinking for observation times as long as 54 minutes and lhat on-time fractions are independent of experimental time-resolution from 1-200 ms.
