A fibre reinforced crystalline mullite matrix composite was prepared by sol-gel processing. The unidirectional fibre composite was synthesized by single stage infiltration of carbon fibres with an alumina-silica sol (3 Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}{center_dot}2SiO{sub 2}), followed by hot-pressing at 1550{degrees}C under 15 MPa to 95% of full density. The composite exhibited non-brittle failure with a mean flexural strength of 703 MPa.
