This paper presents the framework of computer soft-ware called EASY5x/WT developed at the University of Texas at El Paso for the study of control designs for teetered rotor wind turbines. The modular design of the EASY5x/WT allows the rotor model, aerodynamics subroutines, drive train, generator and control strategies to be modeled in separate modules which are interconnected through state variables. Various rotor configurations and control strategies can be modeled with ease using the interactive graphical interface. Wind turbine simulations are then performed in the time domain. The wind turbine model can be driven by real wind data or statistical wind models. The UTEP-TRTB wind turbine was modeled using the software. Outputs from the simulations including teeter and flap angle, yaw angle, flap, yaw moments, thrust, torque and power. This paper presents the simulation results using the proportional-integral (PI) controller an fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for power regulation in response to a number of wind scenarios. The simulation results clearly indicate that the robustness and smoothness of the FLC for wind turbine power regulation are superior than that of the PI controller. The induced loads on the wind turbine using FLC are also much less compared to the loads using PI controllers.
