Proceedings: Turbine Passage Workshop

A workshop sponsored by EPRI on December 4 and 5, 1984, in Portland, Oregon, explored the safe passage of downstream-migrant fish through hydraulic turbines. Attended by 27 experts in biological and engineering aspects from the United States, Canada, and Europe, it examined the reasons for turbine mortality and prospects for improvement. It was concluded that pinpointing areas of mortality is not presently possible, and, until this is rectified, improvement cannot be attempted. It was agreed that defining mortality influences through review of past research and studies using stop-action photography in model turbines were the most promising avenues of progress in improving turbine passage.
