N.Y. utility trims costs to compete with NUGs
In this era of advancing deregulation and competition, Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. is managing to stay in the generating business. In the process, the utility has cut its expense budget down from $90 million to $49 million per year. Capital improvement expenses have been slashed from $85 million annually to $35 million, all since 1991. Niagara Mohawk`s 400-MW Albany Steam Station is now operating with a full-time staff of 62, compared with 132 two years ago. The utility has placed its Oswego Steam Station Unit Five in long-term, cold standby and concluded that the value of Oswego Unit Six is almost exclusively in its capacity. The result: two operating 850-MW oil units with a staff of 265 two years ago are now a single operating unit with a staff of only 75.
