In a mature exploration area, as in the North Sea, exploration data management is becoming increasingly more important. The cost of exploration is mainly related to data collection and data processing before decisions are made. Effective use and re-use of data will thus lead to more cost effective exploration. The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) in co-operation with Saga Petroleum, Norsk Hydro and Statoil have therefore decided to develop and run a shared database. The name of the ongoing project is DISKOS, which main goal is to establish a common digital on-line geodatabank, consisting of E and P data. The objective with this co-operation is to improve the overall effectiveness of exploration operations. The project is one among others under the umbrella ``Cost effective exploration through co-operation on non-competitive issues.`` There are obvious possibilities for cost savings through the establishment of joint, central data storage. The development of new systems within high capacity data storage and automatic administration by means of robot technology make this type of solutions very attractive.
