Yanmar's new N260 medium-speed engine
YANMAR Diesel Engine Co., Ltd., has an enviable record of sales of its engines to overseas customers, particularly for ships' gen-sets. Many of these machines are specified to burn HFO in the 380 cSt range, and the experience gained from engines in service has been well used in the development of the company's latest series of engines. Designated as the [open quotes]N[close quotes] engines, the series comprises three bore-size variations of 330, 280 and 260 mm, with the smallest of these being the last to be introduced to the market. Whereas the N330 and N280 engines are available in six and eight-cylinder configurations, the N260 engine is produced only in the six-cylinder form. However, output can be between 1103 and 1324 kW at 720 or 750 r/min. With the N260 engine, the piston stroke is 360 mm as opposed to the 330 mm of the earlier T260 design. The N260 engine design follows the contemporary idea of incorporating as many service systems into the engine frame casting to reduce maintenance on pipework and fittings. 1 fig.
