Depletion mode pumping of solid state lasers is a new concept which offers features that are of interest for many practical applications. In this paper we will discuss the physical properties and mechanisms that set the design requirements, present model calculations for a practical laser design, and discuss the results of recent experiments. 1 ref., 9 figs.
