This guide presents methods acceptable to the NRC staff for implementing the Commission's regulations in Appendix A to 10 CFR Part 50 with regard to design, testing, and maintenance criteria for air filtration and adsorption units of engineered-safety-feature (ESF) atmosphere cleanup systems in light-water-cooled nuclear power plants. This guide applies only to postaccident engineered-safety-feature atmosphere cleanup systems designed to mitigate the consequences of postulated accidents. It addresses the ESF atmosphere cleanup system, including the various components and ductwork, in the postulated design basis accident (DBA) environment. This guide does not apply to atmosphere cleanup systems designed to collect airborne radioactive materials during normal plant operation, including anticipated operational occurrences. Regulatory Guide 1.140 Design, Testing, and Maintenance Criteria for Normal Ventilation Exhaust System Air Filtration and Adsorption Units of Light-Water-Cooled Nuclear Power Plants, provides guidance for normal ventilation exhaust systems.
