In focus: Dream drifting -- Steady as you go

Radical innovations in drill and blast drifting technology to boost drill power and penetration rates are unlikely in the near future. Instead, the development efforts of the major manufacturers over the next few years will be concentrated on undramatic but valuable improvements in the three main component areas--drill steels and bits, drifters, and control and monitoring systems--and the matching and coordination of all three to improve the effectiveness of the complete drill system. In this feature the author surveys recent trends and developments in mine drifting.
