Weather information from 1919 to 1978 for five crop districts in Montana was related to data on acres of winter wheat reseeded to spring wheat. The time when wheat usually benefits most from snow cover is during January and February. Heavy snow cover and/or low temperatures in the fall have an adverse effect, possibly preventing the plants from undergoing normal hardening. A non-hardened plant is unable to survive low temperatures of late winter.
