Abstract

A literature review dealing with the health hazards associated with working in wastewater treatment plants and those hazards to the general public from land disposal of wastewater and sludge is presented. Specific areas reviewed include the health effects associated with the incineration and composting of sludge, aquaculture, and various onsite systems of wastewater treatment. The presence of organic chemicals, inorganic chemicals, and parasites, bacteria and viruses in renovated water is implicated as potential health hazards. (KRM)

Sanitary risks to public health are certainly the most serious bottleneck for wastewater aquaculture extension. Apart from the fact of an eventual transmission to man of pathological organisms such as bacteria, viruses and parasites by fish, the wide occurrence in domestic sewage of micro-pollutants like heavy metals and pesticides, generally considered as bio-cumulative, is troublesome. Health risks associated with land application of municipal sludge

The potential for human health problems associated with land disposal of municipal sludge is reviewed. Migration of heavy metals from the sludge through soil into drinking water supplies and into the human food chain is surveyed. Health effects and bioaccumulation of cadmium are examined. Bacteria, viruses, and parasites associated with municipal sludge applied to agricultural lands present potential problems of plant surface contamination. The adherence of pesticide residues present in the sludge to plant surfaces also poses a hazard. (1 graph, 55 references, 4 tables)

The application of sludge and wastewater to agricultural lands may present hazards to human health. These waste materials may contain viruses, pathogenic bacteria, and parasitic worms. There is evidence that these pathogens may survive land application, and thus enter the food chain. Heavy metals, particularly cadmium, present in sludge are a cause for concern. Cadmium accumulates readily in plants and, when chronically ingested, will accumulate in body tissues, especially the kidneys. Persistent organic chemicals (including PCB's) are highly toxic, and are frequently present in municipal sludges.
