Foam frac in the Mesa Verde
Bittercreek Fed 1-3 is a gas well tapping the Mesaverde in the Asphalt Creek area south of Vernal, Utah, in the Uinta basin. The job was to pump 216,000 lb of 20/40 sand in 123,360 gal foam through 4 sets of perforations between 6030 ft and 6293 ft. In January 1981, Ensearch Exploration set in motion the first foam fracture done by the company in the Mesa Verde - possibly the first foam frac ever done in the Mesa Verde. Smith Energy Services performed the stimulation, delivering the highest concentration of proppant ever pumped in the Rocky Mt. - 4 ppg 20/40 sand/gal of foam at the formation. The Bittercreek Fed 1-3 had been treated conventionally on 3 previous occasions. In turning to foam fracture treatment, Ensearch hoped to minimize formation damage and maximize production in the fluid sensitive formation.
