A two stage brake valve for communicating fluid pressure to at least one set of friction elements of a brake system is described comprising: a valve body; a stepped bore within the body having large and small diameter sections; an assembly; a first fluid chamber defined by the extending end of the piston and the larger diameter section; a second fluid chamber defined by the extending end of the pressure valve and the small diameter section, the second chamber being in fluid communication with at least one set of friction elements of the brake system; a first passageway for communicating the first chamber with the second chamber; a second passageway, at least partially defined by the assembly, for communicating the first chamber with a reservoir; a relief valve located in the assembly and positioned to bypass the second passageway, the relief valve opening in response to fluid pressure in the first and second chambers; and means to bypass at least part of the first passageway for decreasing resistance to fluid flow between the first chamber and the second chamber in response to a positive pressure differential between the first and second chambers.
