Mechanism of tetrabutyl titanate catalysis of the esterification of mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate

On the basis of the literature and experimental data on the influence of the composition of the medium on the rate of esterification of mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate by 2-ethylhexanol in the presence of a tetraalkyltitanium catalyst, a mechanism of catalysis was proposed, considering the effects of coordination and the formation of hydrogen bonds. The kinetic equation derived, corresponding to the proposed mechanism, describes the literature and experimental data on the kinetics of esterification within a wide range of variation of the reagent concentrations.
